Matsuura Named OSA Senior Science Adviser

Anne Matsuura, former chief executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF) in Belgium, has been named senior science adviser at The Optical Society (OSA), the organization announced Monday.

Matsuura will assist with the scientific and technical aspects of OSA’s programs and services, and the strategic development of global relationships, and will serve as the society’s international and national government policy adviser.

At ETSF, she managed more than 200 scientists throughout Europe, helping to provide scientific collaborations, training and open-source software to aid in the understanding of chemical, material and biological process properties for both public- and private-sector technology applications. Before that, she was a senior scientist at In-Q-Tel and also held positions as program manager for atomic physics at the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research and as special assistant to the US Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Laboratories and Basic Science.

“Her connection within the global photonics community adds a valuable resource for our members, customers and the broader optics community,” said OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan.

Matsuura received a Fulbright Scholarship to Nagoya University in Japan and earned a bachelor’s in physics and mathematics from Vanderbilt University and a doctorate in physics from Stanford University. In 2004, she received the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence.
