Coherent Acquires Lumera Laser for $52M

Coherent Inc. has acquired privately held Lumera Laser GmbH of Kaiserslautern, Germany, for approximately $52 million in cash, the company announced late Thursday afternoon.

Lumera Laser makes ultrafast (picosecond) solid-state lasers for microelectronics, materials processing and OEM medical applications. The deal is valued at approximately 1.5 times Lumera's projected revenue for calendar year 2012, Coherent said.

Lumera Laser is Coherent's third acquisition in the past two months. In early November the company announced it had acquired Innolight Innovative Laser and Systemtechnik GmbH and Midaz Lasers Ltd. to provide core technology building blocks for an emerging class of commercial, low-cost, subnanosecond pulsed lasers for microelectronics manufacturing (See: Coherent Acquires Innolight, Reports Lower Profit)

Coherent President and CEO John Ambroseo said the Lumera acquisition complements those deals, also targeted "at the rapidly expanding area of short-pulse micromaterials processing and nonrefractive ophthalmic surgery. Our ultimate goal is to provide customers with the broadest selection of ultrafast industrial solutions through the combined building block technologies from Coherent, Lumera, Innolight and Midaz."
