Solutions in the spotlight at Photonics West, BiOS

Photonics technologies and everything they enable will take center stage at Photonics West and BiOS in 2013. The event will set records again this year in terms of presentations, exhibitors and attendees, show organizers report. Organized by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, it will be held Feb. 2-7 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Highlights of the conference will include:

BiOS: Biomedical Optics + Biophotonics will feature personalized medicine; terahertz technologies for biomedical applications; optogenetics; optical techniques for developmental biology; and biophotonic devices.

LASE: Lasers and Sources will highlight laser resonators as well as fiber, solid-state and high-power lasers for materials processing. Plenaries will address particle acceleration, and compact x-ray and gamma-ray sources; 3-D metamaterials; and remote laser welding in automotive production.

MOEMS-MEMS: This program will include microfluidics and medical microsystems, along with micro-optics, adaptive optics and micro-optoelectromechanical systems (MOEMS). Plenary speakers will discuss nano-optics, optical MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) pressure sensors and superaligned carbon nanotubes.

OPTO: Optoelectronics Devices and Materials will focus on optoelectronic technologies for commercial applications, including quantum optomechanics, group IV photonics for the mid-IR, optical angular momentum, silicon photonics, photonic crystals, semiconductor lasers, quantum dots and nanophotonics.

Green Photonics virtual symposium: More than 65 papers will address the application of photonics technologies in solutions to the world’s environmental and energy challenges.

The event will also offer the Photonics West Exhibition, featuring approximately 1300 companies and nearly 200 product launches; the annual Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation, sponsored by SPIE and Photonics Media; and the SPIE Startup Challenge, sponsored by Jenoptik, to give venture capital exposure and mentoring to entrepreneurs working to bring new products to market.
