Test and measurement company Labsphere Inc. of North Sutton, N.H., a Halma company, has promoted two employees. Richard Corbyn, a 13-year veteran of the company, is the new director of standard products and services. Vikrant Mahajan, who has been with the company for seven years, has been named global product manager of LED and solid-state lighting, and also will continue to serve as business development manager for South Asia.

Optics veteran Michael P. Newell has joined Deposition Sciences Inc. of Santa Rosa, Calif., as director of marketing and sales. He previously served as executive director of the Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster for five years and the cluster’s incubation partner, North Bay iHub, for two years.

Michael Mertin, CEO of Jenoptik AG of Jena, Germany, has been named the new president of the European Technology Platform Photonics21. His election fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Osram’s Martin Goetzeler in 2012. Mertin will lead the organization during the transition of Europe’s research and innovation programs into the new EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020.

Scott Clark has been appointed vice president of operations at AOptix Technologies Inc. of Campbell, Calif. Previously VP of operations at Arecont Vision, Clark has held positions at Opnext and Allied Telesis, and has directly managed factories in China and Singapore. AOptix develops optics-based identity verification and wireless communications products.

Precision optics and imaging system components maker Navitar Inc. of Rochester, N.Y., has filled positions at its Special Optics division. David Manzi, formerly the division’s president and CEO, will be the new chief technology officer. Steven Morales, a 14-year veteran of Special Optics, has been promoted from sales manager to general manager. As controller, Thomas Young replaces retiree Matthew Thomas.

The Optical Society (OSA) has named Anne Matsuura as senior science adviser. She will assist with the scientific and technical aspects of OSA’s programs and services, and also with developing global relationships. She will serve as the society’s international and national government policy adviser. She is the former chief executive of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility in Belgium.

Denmark-based NKT Photonics’ Lasse Leick has received the 2012 Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation’s Pasteur Award for his work on the IR SuperK supercontinuum laser, a broadband IR device that emits between 2 and 4 µm. The award comes with a cash prize of DKK 75,000 (about $13,000).
