Corning Reaches Optical Fiber Sales Milestone
More than 1 million km of
Corning Incorporated's SMF-LS optical fiber have been sold since the product was introduced in 1994. This nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber is making its mark as high-capacity, long-haul transmission segments of the market expand. It allows the transmission of multiple high-bit-rate channels in the 1550-nm window and can transmit an unrepeatered optical signal almost twice as far as standard single-mode fiber. According to Curt Weinstein, marketing manager for telephony applications, "SMF-LS fiber has enough capacity for the entire population of Boston to simultaneously have phone conversations with the same number of people in New York City over a single, uncompensated SMF-LS fiber."
