VI Systems Granted 3 US Optics Patents

VI Systems GmbH has been granted three US patents for proprietary technology related to energy-efficient and compact high-speed optical interconnects, the company said on Monday.

The company, a fabless optical communication components developer and manufacturer, said the first patent, "Opto-electronic assembly for high-speed transmission," is essential for protecting its proprietary concept of optoelectronic assembly for high-speed signal transmission based on surface-emitting/receiving components allowing electrical (−3 dB) bandwidth in the TO-can package and for allowing it to be increased to 90 GHz. The concept is suitable for single-channel links, and it also can be used in multichannel data transmission, VI Systems said.

The second patent, "Optoelectronic interconnect for high frequency data transmission at low power consumption," describes the requirements allowing optical links suitable for transmitting optical signals at speeds at and above 20 Gb/s at power consumption below 10 mW per Gb/s. The interconnect includes optical transmitters and detectors having capacitances below 150 femtofarads.

The third, "Method for encoding and decoding of optical signals," addresses a robust multilevel coding scheme where the transmitter is fast and the receiver is slow, such that the response time of the receiver exceeds at least the shortest of the optical pulse durations.
