Wavien Tech Recycles Light in Projectors

A recycling light technology from Wavien Inc. that recovers unused high-angle light from LEDs could increase their brightness for small-target illumination in digital projection by as much as 180 percent.

Traditional light collection optics platforms do not increase the brightness of LEDS and, as a result, are not efficient for projection.

Wavien’s Recycling Light Technology (RLT), however, uses a collar to capture the wasted light in conventional optics designs and redirect it back into the output beam, improving LED brightness with full-color capability while conserving energy by lowering the power consumption. This is especially important for battery-powered projectors. The angle of the beam can be determined by the diameter of the aperture on the recycling collar.

The increase in brightness can range from 30 percent for red LEDs to more than 180 percent for white ones — an energy savings of 25 to 65 percent, or an increase in battery lifetime by 30 to 280 percent.

“Wavien's RLT technology for LED offers outstanding energy saving by recovering unused high- angle light from the LED,” said President and CEO Dr. Kenneth Li. “This recycling technique is a benefit for a wide range of applications including projectors and spotlights.”

The technology is also being introduced into other areas of illumination, including medical light sources and consumer projectors.

It will be showcased June 12-14 at InfoComm 2013 in Orlando, Fla.
