Flir Awarded $42M from Navy for Handheld IR Imagers

Flir Systems has received a $42.7 million contract to provide the US Navy with miniaturized IR systems integrated with laser rangefinders.

The contract for the handheld imager-miniaturized long range (HHI-Mini LR) systems will run for five years, with funding of $950,000 obligated initially. Flir was selected out of four offers received by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Div., of Crane, Ind.

Work will be performed at the company’s Billerica facility and is expected to be completed by June 2018.

The announcement follows other recent wins for the company, including last month’s $23 million deal with the US Coast Guard to provide electro-optical sensory system configuration of its Talon 9-in. stabilized multisensor gimbal system for deployment on the Coast Guard’s H-60 and H-65 helicopters (See: Flir Nabs $23M Coast Guard Order), and a two-year, $81 million US Army contract supporting the Medevac program for different configurations of the same surveillance system (See: Flir Awarded $81M Army Contract).
