Photonics Industries Expanding on Long Island

Photonics Industries International Inc. will expand its operations in Islip and add 40 new jobs, Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency CEO and Executive Director Anthony Manetta announced last week.

Photonics Industries, founded in January 1993 out of the Stony Brook University incubator, makes Q-switched intracavity solid-state harmonic lasers used in mobile devices, communications systems and semiconductors. Its headquarters are in Bohemia, a hamlet of Islip. It currently has 70 employees in Suffolk County and approximately 20 more in Asia.

The company will be investing $6.3 million in a new building and manufacturing equipment and will be creating 40 new jobs that will bring more than $2 million in new payroll to the county, the IDA said.

"Photonics Industries International is confident about our company's future as we join the Suffolk IDA and further establish our roots in the Suffolk County by continuing to hire from Suffolk's highly skilled workforce," said Photonics Industries CEO Yusong Yin.

“Photonics Industries has shown a clear commitment to keeping their operations based on Long Island,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Keeping high-tech industry in Suffolk County provides great opportunities for the growth of our innovation economy.”

“The Town of Islip sees Photonics Industries as a valuable asset to our business community,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “We are certain that the expansion of Photonics Industries will attract a new crop of bright and successful professionals to our area through the expansion of new high-tech jobs. We have made a commitment to fast tracking Town permitting and facilitating needs of companies like Photonics to support this county initiative while growing jobs and creating economic opportunity.”

The Suffolk County IDA, a public benefit corporation of the state of New York funded by applicant fees, promotes economic development within the county.
