Bruker Corp. of Billerica, Mass., has signed a patent license agreement with Minnesota-based 3M Co. enabling it to include 3M innovations relating to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (Maldi) mass spectrometry imaging. The Bruker Maldi imaging work flow features the Bruker ultrafleXtreme Maldi ToF/ToF (time of flight) system. The patents are directed to a technique for performing mass spectrometry analysis on proteins in tissue that has been preserved in paraffin; the technology enables researchers to more easily study formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue for life sciences research and drug development.

San Diego-based Daylight Solutions Inc. has licensed its patented mid-infrared technology to specialty glass and ceramics manufacturer Corning Inc. of Corning, N.Y. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. A manufacturer of quantum cascade laser-based sources and systems, Daylight Solutions holds 19 fundamental patents and 27 pending patents. “The licensing of our technology by Corning illustrates the significance of Daylight’s patent and IP position in the mid-infrared solution space,” said Paul Larson, Daylight Solutions’ president and chief operating officer. “The advancement and protection of our IP position remains a critical strategy for the company.”
