Biophotonic Solutions Closes $1M Funding Round

Biophotonic Solutions Inc. (BSI), a provider of automated laser pulse compression technology, has closed a $1 million Series A funding round led by the Michigan Angel Fund, the company announced this week.

"The Series A capital shores up BSI's resources so that we can aggressively pursue OEM business in microscopy, semiconductor processing and the development of cost-effective ultrafast lasers with adaptive capabilities," said BSI CEO Kiyomi Monro. "We look forward to complementing our established business, which is enabling femtosecond laser breakthroughs at leading universities, with new commercial opportunities."

Typically used for scientific research, ultrafast lasers producing pulses in the multifemtosecond range offer significant advantages for many commercial applications. However, currently these lasers are expensive, challenging to implement, and require manual tweaking from a laser expert to fine-tune their output, the company said.

BSI’s proprietary technology, called “MIIPS,” provides automated measurement and compression of ultrafast laser pulses, automatically delivering optimized laser light to the target. The technology may enable scalable and cost-effective femtosecond laser use in a wide range of industrial and medical settings, the company said.

BSI is a Michigan State University spinoff venture founded in 2003 by University Distinguished Professor Dr. Marcos Dantus.
