Milestones
Jenoptik’s Lasers & Material Processing Div. of Jena, Germany, has sold its 200th laser perforating system. The company finalized the sale of the Jenoptik-Votan system this fall to China’s fourth-largest automotive supplier, Yanfeng Visteon Automotive Trim Systems Co. Ltd. (YFV). YFV specializes in making car dashboards and uses Jenoptik lasers to create “tear lines” on passenger and knee airbag flaps. The laser creates a perforation along the back of the material so that the airbag breaks along the line and opens during a collision.

Advanced materials supplier Nanosys has passed a major production milestone representing a “significant step forward” in adopting quantum dot technology for displays. The shipment of more than 2000 kg of its Quantum Dot Concentrate, used to make Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF), took place at its recently opened 60,000-sq-ft manufacturing facility in Milpitas, Calif. A drop-in optical component for LCDs, QDEF creates a richer, more lifelike color while consuming significantly less power, the company said. It is working with supply chain partners to continue ramping deliveries as demand for QDEF from global display manufacturers increases.
