Dr. Craig Mackay of the University of Cambridge in England received the 2013 Norman Edmund Inspiration Award from optical components maker Edmund Optics of Barrington, N.J. Mackay and his team are building an instrument for ground-based optical telescopes that will produce higher-resolution images than those captured by space telescopes.

Lighting manufacturer Osram of Munich has appointed Jes Munk Hansen as CEO of Osram Americas and as president and CEO of Osram Sylvania. His primary task is to enhance the business transition to energy-efficient LED-based lighting. He succeeds Rick Leaman, who left the company to pursue other interests.

Optical communications provider Oclaro Inc. of San Jose, Calif., has promoted Pete Mangan, a 30-year technology finance veteran, to chief financial officer. Previously the company’s vice president of corporate finance, he has been a leader in helping to drive Oclaro’s restructuring plan.

Robert W. Steenberge, Teledyne Technologies Inc. vice president and chief technology officer, is retiring at the end of the year after 37 years with the California-based instrumentation and imaging systems company. Steenberge, who will serve as a Teledyne consultant after his retirement, will be succeeded by Dr. Edwin Roks, effective Jan. 2.

Infinera Corp. chief financial officer Ita Brennan will resign effective Feb. 28 to pursue another opportunity at a startup company. Brennan has served as Infinera’s CFO since June 2010. She joined the company in 2006 and served in various roles in its finance group prior to her promotion to CFO.

Aerospace and defense company e2v of Chelmsford, England, has named Stephen Blair, formerly of Spectris, as chief executive officer. He will join the company during the first quarter of 2014.

Stephen E. Harris, professor emeritus of electrical engineering and applied physics at Stanford University, has been elected as the newest honorary member of The Optical Society. Known for his work in lasers, quantum electronics, nonlinear optics and atomic physics, he joins a group of only 45 such members elected since the society was founded in 1916.

Adept Technology Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., has named Seth Halio as chief financial officer. He previously was CFO at LED Engin Inc., Novariant Inc., Diamond Foods Inc. and Spectra-Physics Inc.

The Automotive Precision Optical Metrology team at Zygo Corp. of Middlefield, Conn., has won the 2013 Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award from The Optical Society. The team, which used optics-based metrology to lower emissions standards and improve reliability, is led by Frank Stanzel, Dipl.-Ing. (FH), of ZygoLOT in Germany, and includes Dr. Robert Sachs; Herbert Grois, Dipl.-Ing. (FH); Udo Waigand; and Johann Ableitner.

Alan E. Willner of the University of Southern California has been elected The Optical Society’s 2014 vice president. By accepting the vice presidency, he makes a four-year commitment, which includes serving as president during the society’s 100th anniversary year in 2016.

Optical interferometer-based instrumentation maker Bristol Instruments Inc. of Victor, N.Y., has hired Todd Blalock as director of its new Optical Metrology group. He was the founder of Quasar Photonics and served as its president, and also served as chief technology officer at Lumetrics.

CENSIS, a new innovation center for sensors and imaging systems based at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, has named Dave Clark interim CEO. He joins the center from Thales Optronics, where he was technical and product management director for business in the UK and worldwide. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics.
