BP Chemicals Improves Site Safety with Flir Imaging Technology
BP Chemicals is now using Flir Systems’ optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras to detect and document gas leaks, ensuring safe operation at BP’s Saltend manufacturing and process research site.
Three OGI cameras designed for outdoor use have been employed to check plant integrity at the site. One is used to detect a range of gases including methane and methanol; a longwave version of the camera is used to detect acetic acid, acetic anhydride and ammonia — three products processed at the BP site; and a third camera is specifically designed to detect carbon monoxide.

The cameras can scan large areas rapidly and pinpoint leaks in real time. The technology is ideal for monitoring a chemical plant that is difficult to reach with contact measurement tools, and the cameras can safely monitor potentially dangerous leaks from several meters away.
