Lamda Guard, Airbus Collaborate on Laser Shield
Lamda Guard Inc. has teamed up with Airbus SAS to test a metamaterial system designed to deflect bright light and laser beams directed at jetliners.
Lamda Guard develops thin-films coatings that, when applied to aircraft windows, selectively block high-power light beams from any angle. Lamda said the partnership marks the first time an optical metamaterial nano-composite has been applied on a large-scale surface.
There were 3,960 aircraft laser strikes in the U.S. in 2013, according to the Federal Aviation Authority.
