Report: Lighting Grows its Share of LED Driver Market
Revenues from LED driver integrated circuits totaled $1.2 billion last year, with a quarter of that amount representing sales for lighting applications, according to market research firm IHS Technology.
LED driver revenues from lighting applications totaled $305 million in 2013. By 2019 it could grow to $893 million, representing 43 percent of a $2.1 billion market, IHS predicted. Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics are currently positioned as the leading suppliers of LED drivers.
The lighting segment mainly consists of lamps and luminaries, with flashlights, architectural illumination and other applications representing a smaller share of the market. Lamps accounted for most of the lighting units shipped in 2013, and for 50 percent, or $151 million, of the revenue for all lighting chips.
Other significant driver sales were noted in the signage, mobile handset and tablet computer, TV, monitor and automotive markets.
IHS said drivers aren’t subject to the same price erosion impacting the LED market itself. Sales of dimmable LED lamps are outgrowing those of non-dimmable lamps; meanwhile the average price of drivers for non-dimmable lamps is much higher than for dimmable lamps.
