Cobalt’s Raman Airport Scanner Wins MacRobert Award

Cobalt Light Systems has been recognized with the Royal Academy of Engineering’s MacRobert Award for its Insight100 airport scanner.

The Insight100 uses a variant of Raman spectroscopy and advanced algorithms to distinguish between containers and the substances inside them to detect potential explosives. It can identify the chemical composition of liquids in non-metallic containers within seconds and is installed in 65 airports across Europe.

The system can also be used to non-destructively identify pigments in artwork and could lead to medical-grade systems that provide diagnosis of osteoporosis and breast cancer.

The MacRobert Award is given annually with a € 50,000 prize to developers of new technologies that prove useful in multiple fields.
