3i to Sell Light-Sheet Microscopy Systems under Zeiss Sublicense

Intelligent Imaging Innovations (3i) will sell and support lattice light-sheet microscopy development systems under a sublicense with Zeiss’ microscopy business group in Jena, Germany.

Also called Bessel beam plane illumination microscopy, lattice light-sheet microscopy uses ultrathin sheets of light to collect high-resolution, 3-D images from living tissue while minimizing cell damage. The technique was developed by Nobel laureate Dr. Eric Betzig of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, which licensed it to Zeiss earlier this year.

Zeiss will continue to develop a turnkey instrument, but said it wants to make the technology available to scientists quickly.
