Toschek to Receive 2015 Herbert Walther Award

Professor Dr. Peter E. Toschek of the Institute for Laser Physics at Hamberg University in Germany will receive the 2015 Herbert Walther Award from The Optical Society (OSA) and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG).

Toschek will be recognized “for his pioneering experiments (in) laser cooling and trapping of single ions and for his contributions to the understanding of the principles of laser spectroscopy, as well as of atomic physics,” according to the organizations.

The award will be presented in June at CLEO/Europe-EQEC in Munich.

Toschek and associates are most widely known for the elimination of quantum noise in the beat signal of two laser waves, and for the development of absorption spectroscopy of gases in the resonator of a multimode laser, both of which may substantially improve the precision and enhance the sensitivity of interferometric measurements.

Established in 2007, the Walther Award is named in honor of the late professor Dr. Herbert Walther, a pioneer in quantum optics and atomic physics.
