Photonics Researcher Shoop to Lead IEEE in 2016

Photonics researcher professor Dr. Barry L. Shoop has been named president-elect by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2016, Shoop will begin a one-year term as president, during which he has pledged to foster diversity and collaboration. He will succeed 2015 IEEE President Dr. Howard E. Michel.

Shoop is a colonel in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Earlier in his career, Shoop was a satellite communication engineer and chief technology officer of an organization addressing improvised explosive devices.

He holds a patent on photonic analog-to-digital conversion and has authored more than 150 archival publications, as well as eight books and book chapters.
