SPIE Recognizes Fraunhofer Metrology Researchers

Five researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) of Jena, Germany, have received the Rudolf Kingslake Medal and Prize for work on optical metrology.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, awards the prize annually to the authors of what it deems the most noteworthy original paper on theoretical or experimental aspects of optical engineering published in its flagship journal, Optical Engineering.

Stefan Heist, Peter Kühmstedt, Andreas Mann, Gunther Notni and Peter Schreiber wrote the winning paper, "Array projection of aperiodic sinusoidal fringes for high-speed three-dimensional shape measurement," published in November.

The paper introduces a LED-based multiaperture projection system for high-speed measurement of object topographies.

At Fraunhofer IOF, Heist works on 3D scanning systems R&D in the Optical System Department, Kühmstedt is group manager of the 3D Measurement Group, Notni heads the Optical Systems Department, Schreiber heads the Illumination and Projection Group, and Mann is currently working in Esslingen.
