Thorlabs to Acquire Fiber Firm Vytran

Thorlabs Inc. next month plans to acquire fiber processing technologies firm Vytran LLC from NKT Holding AS of Denmark.

"[Vytran's] expertise and product offering are natural additions to our current fiber draw and cabling competencies," said Alex Cable, president and founder of Thorlabs. "As we bring them on board, we will leverage the extensive experience Thorlabs has in nanopositioning, imaging, electronics and mechanics to further develop their core competencies so as to remain at the forefront of current market needs while also expanding the product line to address new market opportunities."

Vytran's manufacturing facility will remain in Morganville, N.J., with its customer support centers in Exeter, England, and Hangzou, China, continuing to operate from their current locations. Thorlabs will also integrate Vytran's product line into its website and provide service through its global offices.

Vytran supplies fiber fusion splicing and glass processing solutions to the fiber laser, sensing, medical, telecommunications, aerospace and specialty fiber product markets.

Thorlabs is a vertically integrated photonics product manufacturer, serving the laser and electro-optics research markets, as well as the industrial, life sciences, medical and defense fields. It provides semiconductor fabrication of Fabry-Perot, distributed feedback and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, towers for drawing glass optical fibers, advanced thin film deposition capabilities, and glass and metal fabrication facilities.
