Lawrence Berkeley Labs Turn toFiber Optic Gigabit Ethernet

BERKELEY, Calif., Mar. 31 -- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory -- home to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, the Advanced Light Source accelerator, and a number of other advanced research facilities -- is upgrading its 10/100 Ethernet LAN to a fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet system. The labs will employ Shomiti Systems' suite of Gigabit analysis tools to implement and maintain the new network, which the facility said is being installed to keep its 3500 employees and 2000 visiting guests reliably connected, as well as to meet the increasing demands of the work performed at the site.
We needed an analyzer that was easy to install and had the ability to decode IPv6 traffic, said Mike Bennett, network engineer at Berkeley Labs' Computing Sciences Division. The labs were already using Shomiti's Surveyor software and Century Media Module 2 cards on its 10/100 network, running through a Shomiti 12-port tap. We were well aware of Shomiti's quality, and by choosing Shomiti for the Gigabit system we could share packet capture data with the existing network, Bennett said.
