Airbus Helicopters Prototypes Camera Mounts with 3D Printer
Airbus Helicopters Deutschland GmbH will use X400 3D printers from German RepRap GmbH to prototype an extension for camera mounts to be used with helicopter observation systems.
Retrofitting a camera on the front of a helicopter requires the use of additional support elements on the cockpit frame, German RepRap said. The characteristics of CAD-designed, cut parts that form the supports are influenced by available mounting space, as well as environmental conditions. Once designed, the 3D printer will produce prototype frames for functionality and maintainability testing.
The 3D printer enables rapid adaptations to be performed on-site, making installation trials quicker and more cost-efficient.
