Lucent Contracted for Chinese Networks

Lucent Technologies of Murray Hill, N.J., has announced that it has signed supply contracts totaling more than $145 million with two telecommunications companies in China. Lucent will provide its WaveStar dense wavelength division multiplexing and synchronous digital hierarchy systems, integrated network management systems and TrueWave RS reduced slope optical fiber.

Under an $80 million agreement with Citic Pacific Ltd. of Hong Kong, Lucent will supply optical networking equipment for the company's 32,000-km backbone network project. Citic expects the project to be completed by the third quarter of 2000.

Guangdong Eastern FiberNet Co. will purchase components and fiber, including 6000 km of TrueWave RS, for its next-generation broadband network in Guangdong province. Lucent is the exclusive supplier of fiber for the project, which is expected to be in operation by mid-2000.
