Rofin-Sinar UK Rebrands as Luxinar

Industrial laser company Rofin-Sinar UK has rebranded as Luxinar Ltd., effective June 25, marking a new chapter in the company’s 20-year history.

Luxinar will continue to operate its manufacturing facility in Kingston Upon Hull, England. The company employs more than 180 people both in the U.K. and overseas, with operations in China, South Korea, Germany, Italy, and the U.S., which are also undergoing a name change that is expected to be completed over the following month.

In June, Luxinar announced a range of new lasers at LASER World of PHOTONICS. Among them are the LXR 100, a 100-W femtosecond laser, and the OEM 100iX, a 1-kW CO2 laser for higher-speed processing.

Rofin subsidiary not included in 2016 Coherent acquisition

U.S. company Coherent Inc. purchased Rofin-Sinar Technologies in 2016 for $942 million. Rofin-Sinar UK was not part of the deal.

Andrew Chambers, Luxinar’s sales director, said Rofin-Sinar UK was divested from the group when the European Commission, which represents the European Union, blocked the sale of the subsidiary after concluding that Coherent and Rofin-Sinar UK “would otherwise have a monopoly position in the EU with CO2 laser sources.”

“As a result of this, Rofin-Sinar UK was sold to a private equity group, CMR,” he said. “As a part of the terms of the sale, we had two years to rebrand. So from October 2019, we can no longer trade as Rofin-Sinar UK.”
