GlobalFoundries Unveils Enhanced R&D Program

GlobalFoundries (GF) has launched GF Labs, a program that the company says extends the development horizon of innovative and differentiated semiconductor technologies. GF Labs will be focused on the advancement of new technology and long-term roadmap differentiation that will enable its customers to develop products and accelerate their time to market.

GF Labs will leverage GF’s extensive patent portfolio to harvest capabilities from a broad research platform including the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (imec) in Belgium, Fraunhofer in Germany, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the U.S., and the Institute for Microelectronics in Singapore, along with a network of university partnerships.

R&D within GF Labs is underway with technology capabilities and solutions already in development in the areas of radio frequency silicon on insulator and silicon-germanium. GF will continue to invest to expand and develop tailored solutions, with GF Labs accelerating solutions based on wide-bandgap semiconductors that go beyond the traditional approach of shrinking transistors. Additional program details and partners will be announced in the second half of 2022.

In March, GF introduced its GF Fotonix silicon photonics platform. The semiconductor manufacturer said GF Labs expands and accelerates this innovation momentum by creating an open framework of R&D initiatives that deliver a pipeline of market-driven process technology solutions.
