Photonics Spectra Preview - February 2023

Free-Space Networks

Contributing editor Marie Freebody explores the proliferation of optical free-space communications systems in satellite communications networks - both from the perspective of emerging technical advancements in the laser and detector components as well as future challenges (and solutions) when producing photonic components for comparatively higher volume spaceborne platforms.

Key Technologies: Semiconductor (diode) IR lasers, beam steering optics and systems, photodiodes (detectors), adaptive optics, optical transceivers, optical amplifiers, lithium niobate crystals and associated modulators and frequency mixing systems space-based (satcom) and free-space (i.e. non-fiber) optical components, quantum encryption is also mentioned

Atmospheric Lidar Detection

Contributing editor Andreas Thoss describes the development of a next-generation ground-based lidar system able to provide wind and temperature data for atmospheric strata 90 km above the surface of the earth on a 24/7 basis. The heart of the system is a diode-pumped Alexandrite laser. Now, what began as a research project is beginning its migration to a commercial reality, which forecasts good things for climate modeling and reporting on space weather.

Key Technologies: Alexandrite lasers, diode-pumped laser technology, ground-based telescopes, avalanche photodiode detectors, Fabry-Perot interferometers, gas analysis, remote sensing, spectroscopy, and other environmentally oriented products might be interested in the application

On-Board Optics

With increasing need for higher data bandwidth the concepts of co-packaged optics and on-board optics are gaining increased attention. While the major driver for the development of these devices is to decrease power consumption per bit, these concepts also hold great promise for expanding optical system integration and higher channel densities.

Key Technologies: Fiber optics, PICs, and optical transceivers are the technologies featured. Embedded components further include Embedded VCSELs, embedded InP or SiPh lasers, and embedded glass waveguides.

sCMOS

This article describes the development of a new camera technology capable of delivering high sensitivity in domains such as soft-Xray microscopy, where it is well-suited to visualize and quantify mesoscale biology in plane and 3D-image reconstruction.

Key Technologies: Scientific CMOS cameras, UV cameras, Peltier (sensor) coolers

Laser Safety

Ken Barat and David Bothner caution laser users against over-reliance on the visual light transmittance rating for protective eyewear.

Key Technologies: laser safety eyewear and equipment
