AXT Receives First Big Order for Green and Cyan LEDs

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 19 -- American Xtal Technology (AXT) Inc. has received a multimillion-dollar contract to provide green and cyan LEDs over a six-month period to an undisclosed customer. AXT designs, develops, manufactures and markets high-performance substrates for the communications industry.
AXT acquired its LED development technology with its May, 1999 acquisition of Lyte Optronics. AXT began shipping green LEDs in limited quantities in April 2000. Some of the application of these kinds of LEDs are: cellular handset backlighting, full color indoor/outdoor displays, traffic signals, automotive instrumentation and the development of white lighting.
Currently, very few companies can offer high brightness cyan and green LEDs because of the significantly greater technical challenges involved in producing these devices over other types of LEDs, said Morris Young, president and CEO of AXT. We are very pleased with the quality of our green and cyan LED products and with the reception that they have received in the marketplace.
