TyCom Adds European Network

PEMBROKE, Bermuda, Sept. 22 -- TyCom Ltd. has acquired the rights to use dark fiber on Viatel Inc.'s Pan-European Network. Viatel is a provider of communications services in Europe and North America.
The acquisition will extend the capacity of the TyCom Global Network (TGN) to four major European cities via terrestrial routes in Germany, France and the Netherlands. The new routes will stretch over 2700 km and link Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Frankfurt to undersea and terrestrial segments of the TGN system as part of the company's Phase 1 deployment plan.
Extending the TyCom Global Network to these major European cities will allow us to better serve our customers and reflects a continued execution of our strategy, said Neil Garvey, president and CEO of TyCom. In addition to deploying the world's most extensive undersea network, we're making broadband connections to the world's telecommunications centers -- which we've also done with our capacity exchange and equity participation in the C2C Network in Asia.
TyCom furnishes advanced broadband communications capacity, systems and services. The company's Global Network is designed to offer multiterabit capacity up to 7.68 Tb/s over a fully integrated system that will measure more than 70,000 km and link more than 35 major cities worldwide.
