Hänsch Wins Schawlow Award

The Laser Institute of America of Orlando, Fla., has named Theodor W. Hänsch the winner of the 2000 Arthur L. Schawlow Award for his work in high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Hänsch is the director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics and a professor of physics at the University of Munich, both in Garching, Germany.

The awards luncheon, with Hänsch as honored speaker, was planned for Oct. 4 at the 19th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) in Dearborn, Mich. He also was scheduled to speak at the ICALEO plenary session, along with C.K.N. Patel, inventor of the CO₂ laser, and Nobel Prize-winning physicists Charles H. Townes and Nicolaas Bloembergen.
