San Jose Offers Laser ’Boot Camp’

Laser technicians who need intense training can attend the Laser "Boot Camp" program at San Jose City College.

The program will compress the normal first-semester laser technology curriculum into one 80-hour, two-week course on laser and optics principles, alignment, soldering, electrostatic discharge and other fundamental skills.

Bolt Systems Inc. of San Jose will provide instructors, and manufacturers Coherent Inc., JDS Uniphase Corp., Lightwave Electronics Corp., SDL Inc. and Spectra-Physics are underwriting the costs. The Laser and Electro-Optics Manufacturers' Association is coordinating the program.

The companies and association are also looking for a replacement for John DeLeone, who recently retired as the instructor of the college's laser technology program.
