Optics Pioneer Lambrecht Dies

Optics developer Karl T. Lambrecht, 97, died in January in Acapulco, Mexico.

Born in Germany, Lambrecht developed techniques for making prisms and polarizers from calcite. He founded the Karl Lambrecht Corp. to make crystal and specialty optics and, in the 1950s, started mining calcite to ensure material quality.

The Optical Society of America presented Lambrecht with its David Richardson Medal in 1975 to honor his lifelong dedication to the field.
