Virtek Vision Acquires FONA Biotech Business
WATERLOO, Ontario, Canada, April 30 -- Virtek Vision International Inc. has acquired Toronto based FONA Technologies, a biotech start-up with the exclusive global license to a Fibre Optic Nucleic Acid (FONA) biosensor technology -- the next generation in genetic testing.
"This acquisition provides an exciting opportunity to combine our technologies and develop solutions for the estimated $12.6 billion market for genetic testing, including clinical diagnostics and industrial applications such as food and water testing," said Jim Crocker, president and CEO of Virtek Vision International. "The FONA Abiosensor will be marketed as a disposable genetic test, requiring instrumentation closely related to laser excitation and optical detection technology that is already employed in the Virtek-ChipReader DNA scanner."
