CyOptics 40 Gb/s Modulator Achieves Highest Bandwidth Among Commercial Devices

WALTHAM Mass., June 28 -- CyOptics Inc., a developer of 10 and 40 Gb/s active optical components, announced that its 40 Gb/s Electro-Absorption Modulators (EAMs), which are based on indium phosphide, are achieving bandwidth in excess of 36 GHz, the highest among commercial modulators, the company said. The alternative devices, including 40 Gb/s lithium niobate modulators and other EAMs, are specified at 30 GHz or below, the company said.
CyOptics has been shipping samples of the 40 Gb/s EAM to select customers since January 2001. Initial production will be available during the fourth quarter of this year, with high volume quantities available in the first quarter of 2002.
