Rofin-Sinar Sells Medical Laser Business to WaveLight

PLYMOUTH, Mich. & HAMBURG, Germany, July 19 -- Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc., a developer and manufacturer of high-performance laser beam sources and laser-based solutions, announced that it intends to sell the medical laser business of Carl Baasel Lasertechnik GmbH, Starnberg, a majority-owned subsidiary of Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH, to WaveLight Laser Technologie AG in Germany.
Under the terms of this agreement WaveLight Laser Technologie AG will acquire Carl Baasel Lasertechnik's medical laser business, which deals with the development, manufacturing and distribution of laser systems for aesthetic surgical applications. The integration of the medical laser business into WaveLight's corporate structure is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
Since last year's acquisition of the Baasel Lasertech Group, Rofin has streamlined its business areas down to three core business units: Macro, Micro and Marking.
"Rofin and WaveLight took a strategically important step together," said Carl F. Baasel, founder and managing director of Carl Baasel Lasertechnik GmbH. "Due to the excellent possibilities of integration into WaveLight's business activities, the medical laser business will experience faster growth, and our company will be able to concentrate more on its core business areas: laser micro and marking products and system solutions for industrial applications."
