Nitto Denko and 3M Jointly Develop LCD Film

ST. PAUL, Minn., May 8 -- 3M and Nitto Denko have jointly developed a new polarization film for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The film, which the companies say offers improved brightness, viewing angle and thickness characteristics over similar products, is expected to be available in July 2003.

The collaboration follows the resolution of intellectual property issues between the two companies, and draws on 3M's expertise in polarization conversion film for LCDs and Nitto Denko's expertise in polarizing film. 3M will supply its Vikuiti brand film to Nitto Denko, which will combine it with its polarizing film to create the new product, to be sold to LCD panel manufacturers.

Nitto Denko said it plans to gradually phase out its current product and replace it with the companies' jointly developed products, but that it will fill existing orders in the interim.

3M and Nitto Denko said they also plan to conduct joint research in optical design technology and in high-polymer, precision processing technology, and said they will continue to develop products for LCD panels.
