KISTA, Sweden -- Researchers have designed a semiconductor laser tunable in the erbium range that could replace more than 40 conventional fixed-wavelength lasers in dense wavelength division multiplex (WDM) systems. The new laser, a grating coupler sampled reflector from Altitun AB, will allow dense WDM equipment to back up multiple fixed-wavelength lasers with a single tunable laser, thereby offering high-channel-count systems that are cost- effective and reliable. "This solves the problem of how to ensure network reliability without backing up every fixed-wavelength laser by a spare laser...Read full article
