Seimens subsidiary Osram GmbH, a Munich, Germany, maker of lighting products, and Vishay Semiconductor GmbH, a subsidiary of electronic and semiconductor component maker Vishay Intertechnology Inc., based in Malvern, Pa., announced that Vishay is acquiring the right to manufacture and sell LEDs for white light with conversion technology and surface-mount LEDs for high-current applications (power SMT LEDs), for which Osram hold patents. The white LED technology, developed by the Osram's subsidiary, Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH (Regensburg, Germany), enables white LEDs to be produced with blue-emitting indium gallium nitride chips by using a suitable phosphor converter; applications include automotive interior lighting. Osram Opto Semiconductors holds a number of patents relating to white LEDs and has licensing agreements with Nichia, Rohm, Everlight, Lite on and Samsung Electro Mechanics. . . . Veeco Instruments Inc., of Woodbury, N.Y., announced it has received an order worth more than $10 million for multiple metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) production systems from Fujian Quanzhou Sanan Group Ltd., a Fujian Province, China, manufacturer of high-brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs). The order is for Veeco TurboDisc MOCVD GaNzilla systems, which can be used for the production of white, blue and green HB-LEDs. MOCVD tools are used in developing compound semiconductor materials for HB-LED lighting applications. . . . Agilent Technologies Inc. has introduced online training for gas chromatography, a technique used in the petrochemical, hydrocarbon, chemical and environmental industries.
