Femtosecond lasers are useful in machining applications as well as in medicine, precise rangefinding and fluorescence studies. Fiber lasers offer an attractive alternative to conventional femtosecond sources because of their high efficiency and their potential to generate very high output powers. A research group at Tampere University of Technology in Finland has focused considerable effort recently on developing ultrafast fiber lasers. In its collaborations with Fianium-NewOptics Ltd. of Southampton, UK, the group has developed what it believes to be the shortest-wavelength mode-locked...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
