Raytheon to Produce Navy SATCOM Systems

MCKINNEY, Texas, June 18 -- Raytheon Co. will produce additional submarine high-data-rate (sub HDR) multiband satellite communication (SATCOM) systems under a multiyear contract worth up to $50 million.

The US Navy Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence and Space (PEO C4I & Space) recently issued the first-year contract, worth $33 million. To date, Raytheon has developed and delivered more than 50 sub HDRs under previous contracts worth more than $130 million.

Sub HDR links submariners to the Global Broadcast Service, the Milstar satellite constellation and the Defense Satellite Communication System via a unique mast antenna that connects them to the above-sea world. Sub HDR gives submarines high-data-rate, multiband SATCOM capability; the system lets sailors transmit and receive information by raising a mast just above the ocean's surface while the ship is submerged at periscope depth. The mast-mounted SATCOM system transmits secure wideband multimedia, secure and nonsecure Internet access, voice and data traffic, imagery and video teleconferencing.

Captain Frank Unetic, program manager for the Navy Submarine Communication Program Office, said, "Sub HDR makes optimal use of high-efficiency, small antenna, multiband technology and state-of-the-art packaging to provide bandwidth

Steven Rosenblum, Raytheon director of Navy SATCOM programs, said, "Sub HDR is the submarine community's window to the world. The system vastly improves a submarine's mission capability and a submariner's quality of life."
