Ajay Malhotra has been named senior vice president of product marketing, Jim Miller as senior vice president of development and Craig Johnson as vice president of business development at Cadence Design Systems Inc., a San Jose, Calif., supplier of electronic design technologies and engineering services. Cadence said its Implementation and Design and Verification divisions will be consolidated into a unified product development organization, to be led by Miller, who has held engineering and management positions at Intel Corp., Broadcom Corp. and Silicon Spice. Malhotra, who will focus on technology and product marketing, was formerly co-general manager of Enterprise Marketing and Planning in Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group. Johnson was most recently director of Strategic Marketing in Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group. Cadence also announced that Ping Chao, executive vice president and former general manager of the Design & Verification Division, will be senior advisor to the executive chairman and executive team, and that Lavi Lev, a member of the executive team and general manager of the Implementation Division, will leave the company at the end of this year to pursue other interests. . . . Sabeus Photonics, a Chatsorth, Calif., developer of fiber optic sensing technology for military surveillance applications, announced today it was awarded a $1.3 million development contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to develop a new high-strength fiber sensor array used for sonar systems on US Navy nuclear submarines. Sabeus received two previous US Navy development contracts, valued at approximately $400,000, from Pennsylvania State University's Applied Research Laboratory's Electro-Optics Center in Kittanning, Pa. Sabeus established an R&D and advanced manufacturing facility in Freeport, Pa., in 2003 to develop next-generation fiber optic sensors for military and commercial applications. The facility has undergone three expansions to accommodate the contract work.
