Adaptive Optics Produce Ultrasharp Images of Sunspot

SUNSPOT, N.M., Oct. 17 -- Advanced technologies now available at the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Dunn Solar Telescope at Sunspot, N.M., are revealing striking details inside sunspots and hint at features remaining to be discovered in solar activity. This image, spanning an area more than three times wider than Earth, was made possible by the Dunn's recently completed AO76 advanced adaptive optics image-correction system and a new high-resolution CCD camera. The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy operates the Dunn as part of the National Solar Observatory under a...Read full article

    adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    ccd camera
A CCD camera, or charge-coupled device camera, is a type of digital camera that utilizes a CCD image sensor to capture and record images. CCD cameras are widely used in various applications, including digital photography, scientific imaging, surveillance, and machine vision. CCD camera suppliers → The key components of a CCD camera include: CCD image sensor: The heart of a CCD camera is the CCD image sensor, which is a semiconductor device consisting of an array of...
