Albis Optoelectronics AG, a manufacturer of photodiodes for fiber optic datacom and telecom applications, has named Rene Regez, CEO of Coma Service AG, as president of its board. Franz Richter, former CEO of Suss Microtech and current CEO of Unaxis Semiconductor Div., has also joined the Albis board. The company says the appointments coincide with a substantial cash increase, allowing it to add production capacity and increase product development and staff at its high-volume fab in Rueschlikon, Switzerland. . . . Rocklin, Calif.-based Ealing Catalog Inc., a manufacturer of optics, optomechanics and lasers accessories, has opened a UK sales and distribution office at the OpTIC Technium Centre in North Wales. The company says European Operations Manager Tina Jones will provide sales support and distribution from its warehouse there, and Ealing will be working with OpTIC Technium and the University of Wales, Bangor, on new products. The address is Ealing Catalogue Ltd, OpTIC Technium, Ffordd William Morgan, St Asaph Business Park, St Asaph, LL17 0JD, North Wales, UK. The phone number is +44(0)1745 535 222 and the fax number is +44 (0)1745 535 224. . . . ADE Corp. of Westwood, Mass., a supplier of metrology and inspection systems required for production in the silicon wafer, semiconductor device, magnetic data storage and optics manufacturing industries, says that Peter Wolters AG, a worldwide supplier of silicon wafer polishing equipment, has installed ADE's WaferSight wafer geometry system at its research and development lab in Germany. Peter Wolters R&D Director Georg Moersch says the new system will help the company improve its wafer quality at the 35-nm technology node.
- A lens aberration, resulting from different magnifications in the various lens zones, that occurs in that part of the image field that is some distance from the principal axis of the system. Extra-axial object points appear as short cometlike images with the brighter small head toward the center of the field (positive coma) or away from the center (negative coma).
- A sub-field of photonics that pertains to an electronic device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
- The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
- A cross-sectional slice cut from an ingot of either single-crystal, fused, polycrystalline or amorphous material that has refined surfaces either lapped or polished. Wafers are used either as substrates for electronic device manufacturing or as optics. Typically, they are made of silicon, quartz, gallium arsenide or indium phosphide.
