Mode-Locked Parametric Oscillator Produces 700-ps Pulses

Intracavity loss modulator chops circulating power at resonant frequency.

Breck Hitz

Until the development of periodically poled nonlinear crystals with high, broadband parametric gain, mode-locking an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was an unlikely proposition at best. Recently, however, a collaboration among several institutions in France produced what the participants believe is the first actively mode-locked quasi-continuously pumped OPO. They think the work may offer new possibilities in the development of compact and versatile ultrafast optical sources. In a mode-locked laser, an intracavity modulator whose frequency matches the cavity’s round-trip frequency...Read full article

    optical parametric oscillator
A laser-pumped crystal with nonlinear optical properties inside of an optical resonator in which the output generates coherent light whose output can be tuned continuously over a variety of infrared and visible wavelengths. The OPO generates a short wavelength component called the signal and a longer wavelength component called the idler. Conservation of energy dictates that the sum of the photon energy of the signal and that of the idler equals the original pump photon energy.
