Early-Bird Special Offered

BOSTON, Mass., May 4, 2006 -- Infrared and thermal imaging (thermography) applications will be the theme of clinics, workshops, conference sessions and exhibits at the seventh annual InfraMation Conference, to be held Oct. 23-27 at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas. The event is sponsored by Flir Systems Inc., a Boston-based maker of thermal imaging systems and infrared cameras and detectors.

Expert thermographers will make presentations on topics such as plant predictive maintenance, thermal research and development, online process monitoring and control and nondestructive testing. Home energy conservation, home inspection, research software and thermographer safety will also be topics. Interactive panel discussions and user groups will be new features this year.

InfraMation provides opportunities for thermographers of all skill levels, including those who are just starting to research the benefits of infrared cameras, Flir said. Professional thermographers can renew and maintain their thermography certification, and learn new thermography principles and method, by attending InfraMation clinics.

The Infrared Training Center (ITC) of Boston will offer training and clinics at Inframation. Robert Madding, PhD, director of the ITC, said, "By attending InfraMation, thermographers learn not only how to better operate infrared cameras, but also enhance their IR image interpretation skills, enabling them to more easily identify and diagnose real-world problems that can improve both their jobs and their company's bottom line. Attendees benefit through presentations and clinics that highlight real-world applications, providing expert tutorials and examples of how properly applied infrared thermography benefits through cost savings and, most importantly, increased worker and structural safety."

Flir said those who register by June 30 will receive five free nights lodging, a free guest pass and a choice of an iPod Nano or a Magellan GPS unit. For details, visit www.inframation.org, or call (800) 254-0632.

Glossary
infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
thermal imaging
The process of producing a visible two-dimensional image of a scene that is dependent on differences in thermal or infrared radiation from the scene reaching the aperture of the imaging device.
thermography
Thermography is a technique that involves the use of an infrared imaging device, called a thermal camera or infrared camera, to detect and visualize the infrared radiation emitted by objects. This technology allows for the creation of thermographic images, also known as thermograms, where variations in temperature are represented by different colors or shades. The basic principles of thermography are as follows: Infrared radiation emission: All objects with a temperature above absolute zero...
