Broadband Light Amplifier on a Chip Created

ITHACA, N.Y., July 17, 2006 -- By creating a broadband light amplifier on a silicon chip, researchers said they have made a major breakthrough in the quest to create photonic microchips that use beams of light traveling through waveguides instead of wires, allowing for the simultaneous transmission of information at different wavelengths.  A team of Cornell University researchers working with Alexander Gaeta, Cornell professor of applied and engineering physics, and Michal Lipson, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, used the Cornell NanoScale Facility to make the devices. The advantage it...Read full article

    Glossary
    amplifier
A device that enlarges and strengthens a signal's output without significantly distorting its original waveshape. There are amplifiers for acoustical, optical and electronic signals.
    broadband
Indicating a capability to deal with a relatively wide spectral bandwidth.
    chip
    1. A localized fracture at the end of a cleaved optical fiber or on a glass surface. 2. An integrated circuit.
    four-wave mixing
A phenomenon that occurs in WDM and DWDM systems when three closely spaced signal wavelengths near the zero-dispersion wavelength interact with each other, producing a fourth wavelength that interferes with the original signal. A moderate amount of dispersion can be designed into some systems to ensure that this effect does not take place.
    wavelength
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
