The PCEdu-1 Photon Counting Fundamentals package is an entry-level lecture and laboratory tutorial on low-light sensing or semiconductor device physics, suitable for OEM or academic environments. Available from SensL Technologies Ltd., the module contains tools and documentation that will take users from the basic theory of photon counting and photodetection through to application examples. Lecture notes in a series of six modules include topics such as quenching fundamentals and photodiode operation and characterization. They are in preparation for five lab sessions that enable trainees to gain experience with related devices. Hardware for the experiments is included.

Glossary
photodiode
A two-electrode, radiation-sensitive junction formed in a semiconductor material in which the reverse current varies with illumination. Photodiodes are used for the detection of optical power and for the conversion of optical power to electrical power. See avalanche photodiode; PIN photodiode.
