Cognex Corp. of Natick, Mass., a maker of machine-vision sensors and systems, has appointed Pascal Dorster as senior director of In-Vehicle Vision Sensors (IVVS). Using CMOS sensors, PascalDorster.jpgdigital signal processors and proprietary vision software, the sensors monitor the space around a vehicle and warn drivers when potentially dangerous conditions exist. Dorster joins Cognex after 12 years at Texas Instruments, where he most recently served at their Houston Digital Signal Processing (DSP) headquarters as business manager in charge of increasing its worldwide market share for DSPs in new applications including in-vehicle vision, video surveillance and video conferencing. Prior to that, he served as program manager for the Texas Instruments C5000 DSP.

Glossary
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
vision
The processes in which luminous energy incident on the eye is perceived and evaluated.
