Record 25.6 Tb/s Reported

A record 25.6 terabits per second (Tb/s) of optical data was reportedly transferred over a single fiber strand, using 160 wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels -- enough bandwidth to transmit the data from more 600 DVDs per second. These results far surpass the previous transmission record of 14 Tb/s, established in September 2006 (A terabit is a trillion bits of data). Alcatel-Lucent announced the accomplishment today in a post-deadline paper accepted at OFC/NFOEC, being held this week in Anaheim. It said it employed the skills of its researchers in the US and France to...Read full article
